The Majestic Owl

Mrs Anderson read us the book ‘First Flight’ by June Crebbin. We talked about the narrators point of view and used a Gemini Gem to prompt us to think more deeply about what the story might look like when told in the first person.

As the sun dipped below the hills, the breeze began to shake the trees. Tonight, I was finally getting prepared for my very first flight with Mum, even though my legs were swaying just as much as the branches.” I am still excited for my flight. I can see all my owl friends zooming in the sky. Well, birds peek at the tree beside me as it sounds like a clock ticking.

My heart beat racing as fast as a car.As the wind passed by like a grave stone on top of my body. “Suddenly, the wind pushed me, and my heavy wings wouldn’t open!” as I’m falling i began to panic as my wings would not spread then my Mum came and caught Me as I almost hit the ground. And flew me back to the tree where I tried to fly again and as I prepared for my second try.

I took deep breaths and my heart beat began to cool down as if I was drinking a nice refreshing drink. And then I jumped and my wings spread like if I was going for a big hug. The world looks so beautiful I can see everything. The trees move with the wind as a nice cool breeze hits my face. I knew that I could fly. I found out that if I believed in myself I could do it. I couldn’t have done this without my mother’s help and all I had to do was just be brave.

Long division

For maths this week our main focus was  long division.  So far we have been revising and answering questions that revolve around division using the  long method.  We put together a Google slide to help/explaing to people how to do short/long division.  Have a Look! I hope this helps you.

Subtration Algorithm

For this task Group 2 in maths did a DLO about how to do subtraction algorithm. We explained the information how to do subtraction algorithm, this was the prompt,

How to do subtraction algorithm, first you have to start from the right then go on. Let go on the equation, In this equation you have to put the larger number at the top of your equation. this equation 67892 – 978.

Let’s subtract it now, 8 – 2 you can’t do that but you can’t do that then you have to borrow from the 9, then the 9 turns into an 8 then you take the 1 put it with the 2 then it becomes a 12. And now it becomes 8 – 12 = 4. 7-8 = 1, now 9-8 you can’t do that and borrow from the 7 and that becomes a 6, now it it is a 9 – 18 = 9. There is no more numbers any to subtract and that is your answer.

Addition Algorithm

For this task group 2 made a DLO of how to do addition algorithm. We gave the information of how to do addition algorithm. This was the information that we gave.

Stack the numbers with the digits aligned by place value then start from the right and add the numbers up if over 10 keep the 1 digits and move the tens then add it up and if still over ten then carry it over again and continue to the hundreds and any other place values adding the carried number then adding all them up and the total answer.Stack the numbers with the digits aligned by place value then start from the right and add the numbers up if over 10 keep the 1 digits and move the tens then add it up and if still over ten then carry it over again and continue to the hundreds and any other place values adding the carried number then adding all them up and the total answer.

Multiplication

For this task group 2 made a DLO of how to do multiplication. We gave the information of how to do multiplication. This was the information that we gave.

Put the equation in the right formation. (To the right)
Times the 9 to all top number
Add the answers of the times to the bottom.
Add a placeholder when multiplying the 2 due to it being the second number.
Multiply all top numbers and add answers to the bottom.
Add both of the answers and there’s your answer!

Add leftovers to the next top number. Times it normally then add the leftover number. Repeat with any leftovers. (If no more numbers are to the side js add it to the answers.)

Cross out anything that is used or useless.

Short Division

For this task group 2 made a DLO of how to do short divison. We gave the information of how to do short divison . This was the information that we gave.

Write the number you are diving under a line and put the divisor on the outside. Start with the first number of the dividend. See how many times the divisor fits into it , and write the amount of times above the line . if there’s an remainder carry it over to the nex number of the dividend and keep going until you’ve gone through all the numbers. If there are anything left that can’t be divided that is the remainder or if your doing decimals.

Life in the annex

LI: To write a description of life with the Frank family in the annex in 1942

We are reading the book ‘Diary of Anne Frank’. Mrs Anderson created a Gemini Gem to protmpt us to think more deeply about what life would have been like in the annex, what we felt and why we felt that way.
I enjoyed using the Gem because it helped us include more detail in our writing and gave us questions we could answer to get a deeper understanding.  It also helped me be more specific about what I was writing.

The annex was quiet except for our hearts skipping a beat as we heard rattling at the book case.  The echo of the clock chiming, feeds the nervousness in us, growing by each chime.   Persecuted  by Germans everyday forced us to hide away in this secret annex that was very cramped, old and basic.  Consisting of dull colours from the floors to walls with scares of the past, some containing the passage of time with centimeters.  We needed to be very silent during the daytime making sure we wouldn’t be caught or we’ll  be sent away to a concentration camp  where the Germans take and make lives miserable for the Jewish.  Everyday was like the day before, sleeping, eating, repeating and fearing every second of it,  yet Anne Frank recorded all of it and  her experiences in her diary.

Food wasn’t any better, as it was limited, repetitive and we relied so much on helpers to get it from point A to point B. Which for them was a very risky job because if they were found they would have been eliminated on the spot.  Soon enough food was falling out of reach we needed to ration everything,  the longer the war the shorter the food.  We wouldn’t have food to fill us to the brim and most of the time we’ll be starving.

I am an Agent of change

for this task we did our vision board revloving around the things we want to accomplish, we also included our country repersenting our ethnicity.  the things I included that I wanted to accomplish is improving better at maths and be apart of an manu competion.

my goal is to make it in to de la salle or otahuhu college.

About Me: kou wai Au

Malo e lelei, my name is ‘Ene. I am very excited to be a year 8 student, especially being the head boy of 2026. The subjects I enjoy at school are maths and art. After school I like to play rugby, one of my many hobbies is playing the ukulele.

One of my goals is to have a positive attitude towards my learning and improve in many of my subjects
